The first step was to generate new textile designs that use “deep convolutional generative adversarial networks (DC-GANs) and cyclic GANs,” the report notes. “The results of these models were compared to similar designs created by design students.”

Lee said that a comparison between human-made and AI-generated designs shows that while both designs are similar, “the biggest difference is the uniqueness and originality seen in human designs that come from human experience . However, using AI in repetitive tasks can improve designers’ efficiency and free up their time to focus on more difficult creative work.” Lee said it’s worth creating a model for “human-artificial collaboration intelligence’ that integrates GANs with human creativity.
